The fountain located on Level 1 of the Eaton Centre, with
its 50 foot high jet spray, has always been a crowd favourite
and a place where all are welcome to part with their spare change
and make a wish.
For nearly 25 years, those wishes and coins in the fountain
have resulted in over $2 million being donated to local charities.
Each week the change is gathered from the fountain and set aside
for charity.
Recently we were very pleased to be able to fill over
40 bags with coins and donate it to the Canadian Helen Keller
Centre. The Helen Keller Centre is a residential training centre,
serving the many needs of adults with the dual sensory disability
of deaf-blindness.
Just imagine the challenges these courageous people face
each day, from the moment they wake up in the morning until
they retire at night. The little things that the majority of
us take for granted are daily challenges to those with dual
sensory disabilities.
Named for Helen Keller, the real-life heroine who mastered
the challenges of her disabilities, the Centre offers a training
program that is considered one of the best in the world. The
biggest challenge the Centre faces is the shortage of qualified
teachers or intervenors.
The Helen Keller Centre is meeting that challenge through
its "Train the Trainer" and "Peer Support Group" programs, hoping
that those who are deaf-blind will be able to share their knowledge
and newly-developed skills with others in need.
