The
Ontario Trillium Foundation |

Beginning
with the Train-the-Trainer program,
CHKC will begin to offer persons who are deaf-blind opportunities
to hone their skills for independent living. Once the trainees
have gained confidence in their abilities they will learn teaching
techniques.
This will give the participants
the tools to return to their home communities and help their
peers to become more skilled and connected. As funding permits
Intervenor Services for persons living in the community will
be added.
The courses
being offered include:

systems: hand-over-hand sign language, 2-hand. E-mail and
web literacy , braille. |
| Orientation
and Mobilitiy |
Long
Cane travel skills,
Orientation in new environments. |
| Presentation
Skills |
Public
Speaking, Advocacy skills. |
| Daily
Living Skills |
Household
management, budgeting, eating well, social skills. |
| Technical
Devices |
Assessing
and exploring options available. How to install & maintain
software and hardware. |
| Starting
Peer Support Groups |
Learning
together, supporting each other, initiating social opportunities
for persons who are often very isolated. |
| Expected
Outcomes: |
A
diverse and scattered community will become connected and
stronger. Individuals will acquire skills for independent
living and increased quality of life. |
The
Canadian Helen Keller Centre, a division of Rotary Cheshire
Homes Inc. gratefully acknowledges the financial support of
the Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Ministry
of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation.
With $100 million in annual funding from the province's charitable
gaming initiative, the Foundation provides grants to eligible
charitable and not-for profit organizations in the arts, culture,
sports, recreation, environment and social service sectors.
Rotary
(Don Valley) Cheshire Homes Inc. (Toronto)
$324,000
over five years to provide specialized training for deaf-blind
persons in a temporary residential setting for up to six
months, who would in turn train others with similar needs
upon returning to their communities. |
